the democratic party for president of the united states. >> but his supporters didn't stick around, stageing a walkou before the night headliner, bill clinton made the stage. he made his case. >> you can drop her in any trouble spot. pick her. come back in a months and somehow, some way, she will have made it better. that's just who she is. >> good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with us. i'm anne-marie green. president obama addresses the democratic national convention tonight where, yesterday, a longstanding glass ceiling was broken. hillary clinton became the first woman nominated to be a major party presidential candidate. last night, her husband, former president bill clinton, delivered a very personal 42-minute speech on her behalf.

jamie yuccas is in philadelphia with the details. jamie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. if hillary clinton wins on election day, her husband would also step into american history as first gentleman. as you said last night, bill clinton made a case for hillary to become president in that 42-minute long speech and it was his most personal one yet. hillary clinton made a surprise satellite appearance at the dnc last night with a message to young women watching her make history. >> i may become the first woman president, but one of you is next. thank you all. i can't wait to join you in philadelphia! >> reporter: moments before, former president bill clinton delivered a deeply personal address, during which he spoke about his partnership with his wife and called her a change maker. >> hillary will make us stronger together. you know it because she has b n

spent a lifetime doing it. i hope you'll elect her. >> reporter: the first secretary of state became the first to be president. >> i move that hillary clinton be selected as the nominee of the democratic party for president of the united states. >> reporter: after clinton was declared the nominee, angry sanders' supporters walked off the floor. not everyone is ready to support hillary clinton as the nominee, despite person bernie sanders using roll call for his state of vermont to try to unify the party. dozens of demonstrators rallied outside of the arena late into the night. >> we saensend a loud and clear message. >> reporter: some sanders' delegates say it's time to move on. you will vote for hillary clinton? >> he has asked us to do that and i although do as a loyal democrat. >> reporter: clinton's running mate tim kaine will also take

the stage here at the dnc tonight. a lot of democrats themselves are still unfamiliar with kaine so it will be a test for him. clinton, by the way, will accept the nomination on thursday. >> jamie yuccas in philadelphia, thank you so much, jamie. former president clinton asked voters to look at the real hillary clinton and to reject the republican caricature. he portrayed his wife as a warm and compassionate decision-maker, someone who is uniquely qualified to reduce risks and someone who will never give up. >> how does this square with the things that you heard at the republican convention? what is the difference in what i told you and what they had? how do you square it? you can't. one is real. the other is made up.

and you just have to decide -- you just have to decide which is which, my fellow americans. the real one had done more positive change making before she was 30 that many public officials do in a lifetime in office. the real one -- the real one, if you saw her friend bessie emily vote for illinois today, has friend from childhood through arkansas where she has not lived in more than 20 years who have gone all across america at their own expense to fight for the person they know. the real one has earned the loyalty and the respect and the firm support of people who have worked with her in every stage of her life, including leaders around the world who know her to be able, straightforward, and

complete trustworthy. >> cbs news political director john dickerson has more on bill clinton's endorsement of his wife. >> this is both a speech of personal testimony, but it was also a job recommendation. as tim kaine said as he was named as the vice president, if you want to know what a person is really like, look what they cared about before politics, so bill clinton went through a long list of all the committees and reports and studies and efforts that hillary clinton made before she entered politic to help kid. that is all character for her so show she has a heart that has been in this for a long time but the job recommendation part was interesting. it was that idea of change-maker. she is running against change. donald trump and his campaign are saying we are change and that hillary clinton is not change. she has been involved in politics a long time. what bill clinton is changing the definition there and definition is through hard plotting work and telling the

story she was so good at that and these are the two different concepts that change left field in the election. >> before bill clinton spoke, donald trump delivered via twitter. he said the following. bill clinton never mentioned donald trump by name. not the case with former secretary of state madeleine albright who argued trump is not qualified to handle united states foreign policy. >> he has undermined our fight against terrorism by alienating our muslim partners. he has weakened our standing in the world by threatening to walk away from our friends and our allies, and by encouraging more countries to get nuclear weapons. donald trump also has a strange admiration for dictators -- saddam hussein, kim jong-un, vladimir putin. when asked about putin, donald

trump said, and i quote, in terms of leadership, he's getting an a. the truth is that a trump victory in november would be a gift to vladimir putin and given what we have learned about the russian's recent actions, putin is eager to see trump win. >> well, the recent actions albright referred to are allegations that russia is behind the hack of democratic national convention e-mails to help donald trump. the e-mails released by wiki leaks, putin favored donald trump over sanders and worked on her behalf. cbs news is told they are confident the russian government is behind the e-mail scandal. the dem said maybe it is russia dealing with trump. crazy. for the record, i have zero investments in russia. coming up on "cbs this morning,"

we will talk with trump campaign chairman paul manafort about the dnc hacking and have the very latest from the democratic national convention. well, one of the pen who attacked a french church was under surveillance after two failed attempts to reach syria. a prosecutor said the man was born in the normandy town. they slit the throat of a priest and recording the attacks on their phone. police killed the pair and freed the hostages. isis claimed responsibility. the attack appears to be the fourth in europe inspired by the militant group in less than two weeks. cooler, calmer weather is helping crews control a pair of wildfires in california. one fire forced a half dozen parks on the state's big sur coast to close. eight hikers were trapped five days by the fire and they were finally rescued yesterday. and there is still a state of emergency north of los angeles. that fire killed one person and

unchanged gaining less than a point. the nasdaq rose 12. apple's shares jumped 4% in after-hours trading, despite apple reporting a 27% drop in quarterly earnings from a year earlier. it did beat analysts' expectations. iphone sales dropped for the second straight quarter. still, apple is expected to sell its one billionth iphone this week. apple announced it's buying carpool karaoke and turned into a 16-episode unscripted series that will stream on apple music. a host will be announced later. there is a new tenant in the new york city store that used to house the famous toy store, fao schwartz. under armour is moving in in the next couple of years and using the retail space to build its brand. a restaurant here in new
